A VISUAL JOURNEY

I believe a soldier’s sword, a poet’s nib and an artist’s brush wield the power to transform the world. The former not being my weapon of choice, I would rather rely upon inked words and bright pigments. Painting since the age of three, I learnt to communicate my thoughts in colour at the same time I started to form words. Diagnosed with Lupus at five- it was unfathomable that this tribulation would mark the very beginning of my ultimate path in life. Under home isolation, and away from a conventional childhood; I befriended pigments. This led to the creation of works, which were then selected to be exhibited at Lalit Kala Academy. I am the only child artist to begin my creative journey with India’s National Academy of art known for exhibiting retrospectives. Subsequently, I have become a connoisseur of human emotions, capturing snippets of vulnerable and iridescent quotidian moments that make it worth being human- a mosaic of the mundane under the artistic microscope.

My art stems from the primordial desire to give a tangible form to theoretical abstractions. Everything begins with unplanned intuitive strokes, which organically mass together into discernable and familiar forms. It’s like sculpting in paint where each stroke deserves an identity of its own- something that I’ve observed in paintings across centuries. Be it Da Vinci’s earnest desire to experiment, Rembrandt with his bold chiaroscuro- the Impressionists orchestrating a visual symphony with their optics or Van Gogh consuming cadmium yellow in the hopes of experiencing happiness; art history has played an important role in shaping my practice. With my brush, I seek to explore the subtleties of existence by juxtaposing today’s life within a socio-historical context to “capture the trivia”.

Stuck in a rat race, we often end up forgetting what it really means to be human. Art is a visual lexicon of the soul to express its true purpose in a world changing faster than what we can keep up with; “To thine own self be true”- I aim at finding that truth through art and design. My middle name is Rene, and a true Renaissance woman “a la mode” is who I strive to be.
